Early 17th-century England found vendors hawking their wares in the streets---like a hard-sell Turkish Bazaar, complete with descriptions of the goods and services, with occasionally several overlapping, but sometimes in solo. Fish, the services of a tinker or tailor, a rat catcher, parsnip seller, even a "wench" are advertised, and composers like Gibbons, Weelkes, and the lesser-known but just as fascinating Cobbold and Dering composed tunes and music for viols to be played in conjunction with these calls. Some of the "Cries" are melodic; occasionally one is sung on one almost infinitely repeated note. Paul Hillier's Theatre of Voices attempts to imitate the weird vowel sounds of their predecessors and sing the texts with intermittently rough vocal production. The effect is remarkably flavorful. This CD is the aural equivalent of a cinematic period piece; one can practically see the dirty streets, horses, and motley cast. There are a couple of purely instrumental selections as well. Fretwork, the instrumental group, is at its most versatile. This is a unique, fascinating CD. --Robert Levine
