I drilled holes in the old one and sprayed wd40 in it to unstick it, as it would not come out by pulling on it. Once got the old one out this one went right in and worked like a champ.

I first tried replacing the 3 O rings on this valve but they made the valve really tight and hard to turn. Plus, there’s a tiny o ring in the stem which is impossible to remove. Anyway, the valve still leaked so I bought this replacement part. Boy, I am glad I did. Valve fit perfectly and turns easily. No leaks. Very easy to replace. Just remove the locking nut and jiggle and pull up to remove old valve. Insert new valve, be sure to line up the notch. Very satisfied!!!Update. 5 months later the valve is now leaking. Doesn’t leak alot but enough so that I need to fix. Contacted Hayward. Lets see what happens.Latest update on 2/05/2023 - Hayward sent me a new part at no cost. This one is working well. I had replaced the o-rings on my original piston a few years ago, but there's a tiny one inside that continued to allow a leak no matter how carefully I reassembled it. Finally broke down and purchased this replacement piston. It came pre-lubed, so installation was clean as well as quick. No leaks now. 5 stars for quality, but 3 stars for Hayward pricing. No escaping the high costs of their replacement parts.

FIRST: If your handle came off because that little metal pin broke, then you can get a replacement pin - the pool stores carry that specific one; that's a LOT cheaper than replacing the entire assembly. If you cannot get the plunger out because it is stuck, then I recommend disconnecting the pool filter and dribbling some dish soap onto the valves (This was suggested to me by a local pool company). Let it sit for at least half an hour - try again and dribble a little more. The reason you disconnect the filter is because you don't want the dish soap in your filter/pool. Eventually, if it (the valve assembly) still does not come out, then you will (probably) have to drill it out. I bought a couple 12" bits for that purpose and broke through enough of the top portion of the valve to be able …

Man I needed this is the worst way. So glad it was available and shipped fast. Easy to install just make sure you know the orientation of the pipes and it slips right in with an ample amount of magic lube. It literally took me 10 minutes to disassemble and reassemble this. In my case I was certain I needed a strap wrench because the retainer nut was much tighter than "hand tight" as it is stated on the nut itself. Removed the nut and yanked out the piston. Removed the seals and lubed them up, put them back on and slid the piston in. Did an operational check and done. Perfect product and so glad it was available on Amazon. I didn't even go to the pool store. I am pretty sure it would have been $30-$50 more.

My pool caretaker told me I needed a new piston assembly but that is could not be purchased separately from its enclosed PVC piping and that would require much PVC plumbing. He had just completed a repair several months earlier on a different part of my system and the costs were building,so I told him that I would take care of it. I reviewed the data on my filter, found the same filter on Amazon and the piston assembly they recommended. It did come in two versions(one as shown and the other with its PVC piping. I ordered it without the PVC and the transaction was smooth and quick. On arrival, I simply unscrewed a retaining cap, pulled out the old piston assembly and inserted the new. It worked beautifully and I saved many dollars. If is lasts as long as the previous (same vendor Hayward)
