A supporting actor on B-grade TV series like Highlander, Jim Byrnes’s first love is the blues. It shows on That River, the St. Louis-born Vancouverite’s third and Juno-winning album (gospel/blues category) from 1995. It’s full of tracks that sound gritty and authentic, thanks to Byrnes’s gruff, lived-in voice and a crack four-piece band (and, on many of the songs, a three-piece horn section).
